Every Saturday
Event details
This open level mat work course is suitable for beginners as well as those with more experience.
The Pilates method is a system of exercises designed to promote body alignment, strength and flexibility. The work is focused around the abdominal muscles and the use of breath to support spinal alignment and promote muscular efficiency. The pace of the class is gentle and focuses the body and the mind on simple actions to increase control. This will allow time for the body to change habitual patterns in order to promote more efficient movement and increase suppleness.

Frequently asked questions
How old do you have to be in order to take part in Adult Classes?
Anyone age 16+ is welcome to take part in the Adult Classes. We have adults of all ages, backgrounds and abilities taking part.
Which level is best for me?
· Introduction classes are for complete beginners or those with limited dance experience. Our teachers will take the time to cover the essential basics of the technique and build confidence over a number of sessions. If you have never done any dance before, we recommend joining at the start of a term for Block 1. This will give you the best possible experience of taking part in the sessions
· Level 1 classes are suitable for participants who have a basic knowledge of the technique, or those with lower levels of stamina
· Level 2 classes are more technically demanding classes for those with previous dance experience
· Open Level classes are mixed level classes, suitable for participants of different levels.
What are the classes like?
The atmosphere in the Adult Classes is relaxed, friendly and welcoming. People come to the Laban Building to take part in dance or movement classes for their enjoyment, relaxation, to improve health, and meet people. There is a real sense of community with participants returning each term, as well as new people starting for the first time.
How many people are in a class?
There are no more than 26 participants in our dance and yoga classes depending on the size of the studio, and no more than 12 in Pilates classes.
Can I have a taster class?
We are unable to not offer taster classes for Pilates. We offer half-term bookings (usually 5 or 6 weeks) so if you are unsure, you only have to pay for a half term block rather than the whole term.
What should I wear?
Please wear soft comfortable clothing that is easy to move in, such as tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt, with extra layers for warmth. For ballet it is helpful if you can wear tight fitting clothing, so that your teacher can check your alignment.
You should expect to do all classes in bare feet, except ballet and street dance. For ballet classes you should wear soft ballet shoes if you have them, but tight fitting socks would initially be a good alternative at the barre for beginners. We do not offer Pointe work as part of our ballet classes. Street dance classes can be danced in trainers with white, non-marking soles (no outdoor shoes). To ensure your safety and the safety of others please don’t wear jewellery when taking part in a class.
What equipment is provided?
We have mats and blocks available for Pilates and yoga, but you are also welcome to bring your own equipment.
What is your policy for latecomers?
For health and safety reasons, participants who arrive later than 15 minutes after the start of the class will not be permitted to take part. This is because they will have missed the essential warm up and introduction to the class, which is vital in the prevention of injuries to participants.
