Community Composition Training Programme

Programme Overview:

The Community Composition Training Programme is a professional development initiative for current and aspiring workshop leaders passionate about creative composition in community settings. Under the guidance of renowned composer, facilitator, and mentor Aga Serugo Lugo, and with the support of highly experienced creative health facilitator and mentor Nicola Wydenbach, you will engage in action-based learning. This includes shadowing and assisting with a creative composition project at Hillview Community Centre, a social group for Caribbean elders in Telegraph Hill.

From February to May, regular project workshops will take place offering you the chance to observe and support experienced community artists. You will gain valuable facilitation tools and tips, practice these tools by leading parts of the sessions, and receive individual feedback and mentoring from the facilitators. The workshops will culminate in the creation of a composition to be performed by the group at Kew Gardens as part of a community arts event.

Who is it for:

We are seeking enthusiastic workshop leaders or aspiring leaders who are passionate about creative composition in community settings. This training programme welcomes vocalists and instrumentalists from all musical genres and levels of experience. It is ideal for those aiming to build a career as a community music artist or those looking to refresh their composition and co-creation skills as part of their ongoing professional development.

What will I learn?

How to lead music warmups
How to use your voice or instrument to create music in a community setting
How to introduce a creative theme
How to co-create a new composition in a group – exploring multiple starting points for a new piece, how to write lyrics in a group and how to introduce dynamics
How to facilitate a workshop without using a piano
How to pick up and continue a composition between workshops
How to rehearse a piece with a community group for a performance
How to teach a song or a piece of music to participants with no musical background
