Introduction
Our audition process is designed to help us find out about your performance style, interests, and personality. We want to assess whether you have the potential to benefit from our approach, and we aim to provide a positive and friendly atmosphere, allowing you to enjoy yourself.
Pre-audition information
Once you have completed your UCAS Conservatoires application, you will be notified of your audition information via the email account you submitted on your application.
Please ensure that you check this account regularly and make sure that messages with the ending @trinitylaban.ac.uk do not go to your junk mail folder, as you may otherwise miss vital information.
You will normally receive detailed information about the audition process, along with your appointment details, no later than two weeks prior to your audition date, but in some cases this may not be possible. We will do our best to update you as soon as we can.
Please note that the audition fee is non-refundable.
The audition requirements for the BA (Hons) Musical Theatre Performance course and the Cert HE Musical Theatre course are the same. Please make sure you are aware of the entry requirements prior to application.
The Audition Day
The audition panel will typically consist of the Head of Musical Theatre, as well as dance, singing, and acting specialists from the musical theatre department. Current students will be on hand throughout the day to support you and answer any questions about the courses, and what it’s like to train at Trinity Laban.
Applicants will participate in a workshop session designed to assess skills in acting, singing, and dancing.
The audition session will include:
- A dance class consisting of warm up, corner activity, and a short routine.
- The performance of a pre-prepared solo song of no more than two minutes in length.
- An acting workshop, involving the performance of the pre-prepared monologue.
Applicants are asked to prepare:
- Two contrasting songs of their own their own choice, lasting no longer than two minutes. Please provide sheet music or backing track. An official accompanist will be available on the day.
- One short monologue.
Applicants should ensure that they are wearing clothing that they are able to move freely in. Please note that no outdoor footwear can be worn in the dance studios.
For the singing session, please provide sheet music for both of your chosen songs so that our accompanist can support you.
You may also bring a backing track on a music player if you would prefer. All stereos are equipped with 2.5mm jacks and this is our preferred method of playback. You can also use any phone or digital device that has a headphone jack. Please ensure you bring an appropriate adaptor for your device.
Applicants will be asked to perform your first-choice pre-prepared audition song and monologue.
You might not be asked to perform all pieces on the day, however, you may be asked back to present further selected prepared repertoire where required.
Your choice of musical theatre performance pieces is entirely up to you. There is no date or gender stipulation as to your choice of piece, however, the songs should represent your identity and be contrasting in style. For example, you could choose an up-tempo and a ballad that will allow you to show different Musical Theatre vocal styles.
It is recommended that the monologue should be from a scripted piece: again no date or gender stipulated.
Throughout the audition session, the panel will be asking questions, talking about your past training, achievements, and your musical theatre aspirations. They will want to get to know you better as a person and examine the breadth of your knowledge and understanding about the musical theatre profession. You should come prepared to talk about the music you listen to at home, shows you have attended, music-making and / or dance or acting opportunities you have had.
Late auditions
Please note that late auditions are via recording in the first instance, with a possible in person call-back in May.
Recorded auditions
We recognise that for some applicants there may be barriers to attending in-person auditions and we will accept pre-recorded applications where required.
Prior to submitting a recorded audition, you must apply via UCAS Conservatoires. To submit a recorded audition, you will need to create an Embark account, following which you can upload the recordings you wish to be considered. Recordings will not be considered until a UCAS application has been submitted. Watch our step-by-step Embark tutorial here.
Applicants submitting recorded auditions will be required to upload the following:
- Two contrasting songs of your own choice, lasting no longer than two minutes per song
- One short monologue of no longer than one minute thirty seconds
- A dance piece lasting no longer than one minute thirty seconds.
Please split the above requirements into three separate video files lasting no longer than 5 minutes each. Please do not upload any ensemble recordings or productions.
