Double Bass

Teaching

Trinity Laban has a thriving double bass department. We aim to prepare students for as wide a range of styles as possible so that they are in a position to take advantage of any playing opportunity that comes their way. Today’s modern ‘portfolio’ musician is required to adapt his or her playing for a number of different situations, and the Trinity Laban double bass course ensures that graduates have the skills and the contacts to meet those needs.

Our exceptional roster of professorial staff includes Leon Bosch, Christopher West, Valentina Ciardelli, Neil Tarlton.
Once a week all the bass students gather together for a two hour departmental class, taken by a resident professor or by a visitor from outside. One of the main purposes of the classes is to work together on orchestral repertoire. Double Bass Professors Chris West, Neil Tarlton and Leon Bosch share the knowledge they have gained from their wide and varied orchestral experience to prepare students for the orchestral world, and an exchange of opinions is encouraged between professors and students. Chi-chi Nwanoku gives her specialist knowledge about period instruments and baroque playing in general. Other visitors from outside have included principal players from many of London’s orchestras, and specialists in contemporary music, session music and even West End shows.

Competitions

Every other year the Vernon Elliott Double Bass Prize is awarded to the winner of the college’s Solo Double Bass competition, and double bass students have also reached the finals of the Bach and Classical Concerto competitions.

Harp

Teaching

Trinity Laban provides musical training of the highest possible standard, equipping world-class, versatile harpists with the skills they need to become a professional musician.

Throughout the programme, students maintain a clear focus on the core ‘classical’ harp technique, so they are fit for the demands – known and unknown – of music in the 21st century. We have an exceptional roster of key staff including Head of Harp Studies Gabriella Dall’Olio – who has worked with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, and whose recordings are widely acclaimed – Frances Kelly (an Early Harp specialist), and Sioned Williams (our Emeritus Fellow, who designed the first ever integrated harp department in the UK for Trinity Laban in 1989. She has combined her position as Principal Harpist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra with teaching, performing, broadcasting, and research).

Performance

The harp department itself offers extensive ensemble performance opportunities, including the contemporary music groups and harp chamber music group, as well as training and work opportunities outside the conservatoire (such as a regular residency with Rehearsal Orchestra). Students are encouraged to prepare and enter auditions and competitions as part of their studies.

Masterclasses

In addition to individual tuition, students also take part in group and chamber music classes, and in our masterclass programme, which has recently featured Fabrice Pierre, Marie-Pierre Langlamet, Sylvain Blassel, Isabelle Moretti, Xavier De Maistre, Elizabeth Fontan-Binoche, Isabelle Perrin, Sivan Magen, Heidi Krutzen, Park Stickney and many others.
