Remembering Mark Loveday (1944–2024)

It is with great sadness we report that Trinity Laban Honorary Fellow, Mark Loveday, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday 4 September, aged 80, from Motor Neurone Disease.

Mark and his wife Liza have been supporters of Trinity Laban for over twenty years, giving generously to scholarships, our instrument fund, Junior Trinity and String Quartet Festivals.

In 2010, Mark created two of our most valuable endowed gifts: one to provide an annual scholarship for a postgraduate student and the other an annual bursary for a Junior Trinity student. Mark advised and supported philanthropic efforts at Trinity Laban, and it was through his counsel that our Sir Charles Mackerras Circle for legacy donors was created. We are proud that the Loveday name is held in perpetuity through the Loveday scholarship endowment and the beautiful Loveday Room at our Old Royal Naval College campus.

In 2013, Mark and Liza were made Honorary Fellows of Trinity Laban in recognition of their untiring support of our work.

An alum of Magdalen College, Oxford, Mark was a renowned businessman, the senior partner of stockbrokers Cazenove  from 1994 to 2001, and the chairman of  Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust from 2002 to 2010. Mark was also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Skinners.

Multiple young people have been able to develop their musical talents due to Mark’s care and generosity. Former Loveday Scholars at Trinity Laban include:

  •  Georgina Bowden (composer and artist)
  •  Sam Ingvorsen (double bass)
  •  Olivia Fraser (oboist)
  •  Hebe Johnson (Junior Trinity student)

Professor Anthony Bowne, Principal of Trinity Laban, says: “We at Trinity Laban are deeply saddened to hear of the death of our dear friend, Mark Loveday.  Mark, along with his wife Liza, have been stalwart supporters of our work for nearly 25 years.  Mark’s generosity did not stop with his financial support, he was also generous with his time and guidance.  He was our ally and a wonderful champion for our students and our work.  We will miss Mark more than words can say”.
